      <image:title>Travel Notes - Sicily as one trip, not nineteen reservations - The route mattered as much as the reservations</image:title>
      <image:caption>The smartest decision wasn’t any single place. It was getting the shape of the trip right first. Each stop needed to contribute something different, and the sequence had to keep the trip moving without making transiting feel like the point. That meant less backtracking, fewer logistical headaches, and a trip that kept unfolding — countryside, an island escape, beach time, food, history, rural Sicily, and finally a car-free city finish.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Travel Notes - Sicily as one trip, not nineteen reservations - Spend where the experience changes. Save where it doesn’t.</image:title>
      <image:caption>The lodging mix was deliberately uneven. Therasia Resort on Vulcano and La Plage in Taormina were the obvious “this is the anniversary trip” stays. Other stops leaned smaller, more rural, or more boutique. That is usually more interesting to me than forcing one price point or hotel category across an entire itinerary. A splurge earns its keep when the property itself changes the experience: the setting, the access, the service, the time you want to spend there.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6ab8272ca095696bd072c870/563b2d5f-c808-45d7-ac7a-1639bd5154ec/briggs-pizza-coast.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Travel Notes - Sicily as one trip, not nineteen reservations - The backup file was long. The trip didn’t have to feel complicated.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Behind the simple itinerary Briggs and Sonja actually used, sat nearly 100 pages of backup documentation: confirmations, parking instructions, ferry details, tour vouchers, optional ideas, and the rest of the travel plumbing. That was of course not 100 pages I expected them to read. They could see the trip from the 30,000-foot level and day-by-day in a straightforward itinerary available in an app or any web browser. The longer file was there when a confirmation number, parking instruction, or other detail was needed — more organized filing cabinet than travel manual. That distinction is the point. The complexity belongs in the planning and the backup, not in the traveler’s head. The best evidence that the scaffolding stayed in the background is what Briggs and Sonja talked about afterward: the hotels, the food experiences, and those quiet moments at the beach — not the ferry connection or where they parked the car. Their review of the trip also praised the logistics, but in service of the larger point: the planning made the trip “so much better.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Travel Notes - Going back to Vietnam, with clients in mind - I also wanted to test the people behind the itinerary.</image:title>
      <image:caption>The other reason for the trip was more professional. I can read a supplier proposal, look at hotel photos, and talk to a sales representative from my office in Seattle. That does not tell me what it feels like when their guide is standing next to my client, whether the driver appears when promised, or how much hand-holding their local team provides when a day gets complicated. Discova’s planning was solid, and their guides were excellent. The basic city-orientation touring worked well, but the parts I remember most were the human ones.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Travel Notes - Going back to Vietnam, with clients in mind - Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City do very different jobs.</image:title>
      <image:caption>This was my first time in Hanoi, and I liked it. But I would not give it the same amount of time as Ho Chi Minh City for most of my clients. My shorthand is that Hanoi feels a little like Washington, D.C., while Ho Chi Minh City feels more like New York. Hanoi is the government center, calmer and somewhat more official, but still with plenty happening beneath that surface. Ho Chi Minh City just has more energy and more of everything. Hanoi’s huge advantage is what sits around it. Ninh Bình is an easy addition for dramatic landscapes. And then there is Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay, which were as spectacular as I had hoped. Our weather was not ideal, but even through the gray, the limestone karsts were extraordinary. Just as useful, I came home with a much better firsthand understanding that “Ha Long Bay cruise” is not one simple product. Where a ship actually sails, how much time it spends in Lan Ha versus busier parts of Ha Long, the vessel itself, and the route all change the experience.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6ab8272ca095696bd072c870/374d6716-34fb-4d60-88b8-6da17f55dd21/HCMC-vietnam-street-moto-traffic-chaos.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Travel Notes - Going back to Vietnam, with clients in mind - The real test is what happens when the plan changes.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I came home with a much fresher sense of Vietnam and more confidence using Discova. That confidence did not come because every day ran perfectly. It came partly because it did not. A beautiful itinerary is easy to admire when everything goes according to schedule. What I really want to know about a local partner is what happens when weather closes a destination, clients are disappointed, and someone has to invent the next three days quickly. That is difficult to learn from a sales deck. Sometimes the best familiarization trip is the one that gives you a problem nobody intended to include.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Travel Notes - Jacob’s Turkish delight - Build around what already works</image:title>
      <image:caption>The days on either side of the tour could be much more personal. Jacob had time with his sister in Istanbul before the group started, including a first full day I arranged with a private guide through the city’s major landmarks. The next day shifted deliberately away from the obvious sights, with a G Adventures add-on through less-visited neighborhoods before he joined the group for the western Türkiye circuit. After the tour, the trip loosened up again. We kept options for independent exploring rather than filling every open day with another reservation. He rented a car for an overnight road trip to Bursa and İznik — places he wanted to visit but weren’t included in the group tour — which he later singled out as especially fun simply because he got to take his own road trip in a foreign country. His final full day became a hammam afternoon at Zeyrek Çinili Hamam, a choice he liked for its restoration story, design, and connection to Mimar Sinan.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6ab8272ca095696bd072c870/258918ab-09e3-462d-a6b7-4c70a2c87685/jacob-cooking-class-turkiye.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Travel Notes - Jacob’s Turkish delight - The result</image:title>
      <image:caption>The G Adventures portion turned out better than either of us could have hoped. Jacob called it “a phenomenal success,” said the group clicked unusually well, and came home with new friends scattered across the globe. Jacob’s own review after the trip put it better: “Between travel anxiety and choice overload, he was able to snap a dream vacation into place with the clock running down.” He summed up the result as “everything I wanted to do … along with everything I didn’t know I wanted to do.” That’s why I don’t think “custom” is automatically a synonym for “better.” Sometimes the smartest plan is to use an existing piece when it genuinely fits — then spend the custom work on the parts that need it. My job is to figure out which is which: what belongs around it, what can stay loose, and what’s better left out. The result can still feel entirely like your trip.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Travel Notes - A few hours aboard Celebrity Edge - The first thing I noticed was the space.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Celebrity Edge looks striking from the outside, thanks in no small part to the enormous orange platform hanging off the side of the ship. That’s the Magic Carpet, a cantilevered space that moves between decks and changes jobs depending on where it is — bar, dining space, pool-deck extension, or embarkation platform. But what stayed with me more than the visual gimmick was how open the ship felt once I was aboard. That came through everywhere: the tall ceilings and huge windows in Oceanview Cafe, the scale of the theater, the three-story Grand Plaza, and especially Eden, a multi-level lounge at the aft of the ship wrapped in glass. Eden is the sort of place I could imagine settling into for a long stretch of a sea day rather than simply passing through on the way to something else. The whole ship has a contemporary resort feel — wood, greenery, big windows, interesting fixtures, and lots of spaces that feel designed rather than decorated. It’s modern without feeling sterile, and noticeably less traditional in its visual language than some cruise lines. I toured while guests were still embarking, so I can’t tell you what those same spaces feel like with a full ship. But the underlying sense of openness was one of the clearest things I learned by actually walking through it. A deck plan can tell me square footage. It can’t quite tell me whether a room feels expansive.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Travel Notes - A few hours aboard Celebrity Edge - A ship tour gives me evidence, not a verdict.</image:title>
      <image:caption>We saw several restaurants, casual options, Oceanview Cafe, bars, the spa and gym, entertainment spaces, and a number of cabin categories. We also ate lunch onboard. That gives me a much better working understanding of how the pieces fit together — including how far it actually feels to walk from one area of the ship to another, which matters when I’m thinking about mobility or cabin location. What it doesn’t give me is a normal week onboard. I toured during embarkation, when service and guest flow were atypical. I had one meal, not a week of dining. I didn’t experience a full activity schedule, nighttime entertainment, or what the pool deck feels like when everyone wants a chair.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>One of my clients, Michael, booked a hotel with me for his first trip to Mexico City. A few weeks later, the rate for his room dropped. I reworked the reservation and saved him some money. His review later reported that the savings were money “which I may have spent on extra tacos.” I consider that an entirely appropriate use of hotel-rate optimization.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Travel Notes - Is a repositioning cruise right for me? - Who is this kind of cruise actually for?</image:title>
      <image:caption>I would look seriously at a repositioning cruise if you like sea days, enjoy settling into a ship rather than constantly rushing off it, and want a trip with a slower rhythm. It can also work especially well if you have enough flexibility for a longer vacation or if being lightly connected to work lets you travel for more days than you otherwise could. I would be more cautious if the main reason you cruise is to wake up somewhere new almost every morning, if you get restless without lots of time on land, or if you are not yet confident that the ship itself is a good match. A 12- or 14-night crossing is a fairly committed way to discover that you chose the wrong cruise line.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Travel Notes - 4 Gays with 8 Days in Morocco - Day 7: Erg Chebbi</image:title>
      <image:caption>We continued toward Merzouga, stopping along the way while Hassan explained one of the traditional underground irrigation systems used in the region and told us stories about helping dig the channels when he was younger. At Erg Chebbi, Hassan took our bags ahead while we made the final approach to the desert camp by camel. The camel ride was an experience but it was the night sky that I will remember forever.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Travel Notes - 4 Gays with 8 Days in Morocco - A note for LGBTQ+ travelers</image:title>
      <image:caption>The question I get most often about this trip is not actually about the desert or the food. It is whether we felt comfortable traveling as gay men in Morocco. Our experience was overwhelmingly positive. At the hotels, nobody blinked at Steven and me sharing a room with one bed. On one rural overnight though, we were offered twins and decided that was not the moment to turn the room configuration into an awkward discussion.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Travel Notes - Travel tips for the newly sober - Choose the trip that makes sense for where you are now</image:title>
      <image:caption>If you’re newly sober, you do not need to prove anything by making your first big trip a tour of the Champagne region or a long weekend built around pool bars. A destination where drinking is less central can make the transition easier. Morocco was a great example for me. Alcohol existed, but it was hardly the organizing principle of the trip. Tea was everywhere, and one of my favorite Marrakech restaurants, L’Mida, doesn’t serve alcohol at all; its rooftop menu leans into teas, juices, and genuinely interesting mocktails instead. With time, there may be no destination that needs to be off-limits. But early sobriety is not the moment when every vacation has to double as a test of willpower.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Travel Notes - Travel tips for the newly sober - Give the trip something to be about</image:title>
      <image:caption>A sober vacation works better when it is not framed as a vacation minus alcohol. Put things on the calendar you are genuinely excited about: a ridiculous breakfast, an early morning market, a hike, a spa treatment, theater, a food tour, a cooking class, a boat ride, a day trip, or whatever makes you glad you woke up clear-headed enough to enjoy it. One of the nicest changes for me is that mornings become usable vacation time. There is something satisfying about being out in a city while it is waking up instead of waiting for everyone to recover from the night before.</image:caption>
